This is an erect small tree, 3-8 m high, smooth, with the young shoot more or less hairy. The leaves are smooth and shiny, oblong-ovate to elliptic ovate, 10-20 cm long, with the tip tapering to a rather sharp point, and the base pointed.

Medicinal Value:

■ A decoction of the roots helps the body disposes of excess water through urination.

■ The roots are used as a poultice for boils.

■ The fresh leaves are used as a sudorific (induces sweating) and for headaches.

■ The leaves, when applied externally, are said to be antirheumatic.

■ The latex is used to cure certain varieties of herpes.

MOLAVE (Vitex parviflora Juss.)

Molave is a medium- to large-sized tree attaining a diameter of 100-150 cm and a height of 25-30 m. Bole is irregular, short and fluted. Buttress is thick, low to medium of moderately large. Its crown is spreading. Leaves opposite, whorled and deciduous. The flowers are blue, numerous, 6-8 mm long, hairy outside the cordial, and borne in terminal, particulate, and ample inflorescences up to 20 cm in length.

Medicinal Value:

■ Infusion or decoction of the wood is considered a good remedy for poison, as a dose of it will produce vomiting.

■ The bark is now use in decoction for diarrhea.

PILI (Canarium ovatum Engl. Burseraceae)

This large tree reaches a height of about 35 m and is a meter or more in diameter. The leaves are alternate, pinnate and about 30 cm long with usually three pairs of opposite leaflets and a terminal leaflet. The leaflets are ovate-oblong, 12-20 cm long and 3-7 cm wide, smooth and
shiny on both sides, pointed at the apex and rounded or obtusely pointed at the base.

Medicinal Value:

■ The “saheng” (oleoresin) is used as a stimulant; a rubefacient (an external skin application causing redness of the skin); and an antirheumatic when applied externally..

■ Poultices of brea (soft resin obtained from genes Canarium tree) are used externally for swellings of the legs.

■ Oleoresin, prepared in the form of ointment, is applied on indolent ulcers.

NARRA (Pterocarpus spp.)

Narra is a medium to large tree with an irregular fluted trunk, attaining a height up to 40 m and a diameter up to 200 cm. It thrives best in flats and gullies, on most sandy loam or day loam soil. It is found in association with dipterocarp species and needs sufficient moisture for its growth.

Medicinal Value:

■ Shredded bark and the fluid taken orally for the treatment of dysentery and diarrhea.

■ Herbal teas and pills made from narra extracts have been popularized in the Philippines for treating a range of diseases and ailments including leprosy, menstrual pain, flu, rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes.

MALUNGGAY (Moringa olifera)

Malunggay is an exotic species but grows well throughout the Philippines. The tree can grow well throughout the Philippines. This tree can grow as high as 3 to 5 meters in a span of 1 year and can reach a height of about 15 to 30 meters without cutting.

Medicinal Value:

■ Decoction of leaves used for hiccups, asthma, gout, back pain, rheumatism, wounds, and sores.

■ Pods are cure for intestinal parasitism.

■ Leaves and pods are helpful in increasing breast milk in the breastfeeding mothers. 6 tables of leaf powder will provide nearly all the woman’s daily iron and calcium needs during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

■ Pounded roots are used as poultice for inflammatory swelling.

■ The fruit could increase the sperm count.

■ The root bark has sex-hormone related properties.

MAHOGANY (Swietenia macrophylia King Meliaceae)

This is a more or less deciduous, erect tree growing up to 10 m or more in height, with a heavy, dark-green, dense crown. It sheds its leaves during summer. The trunk is more or less buttressed. The bark is dark gray and ridged. The leaves are alternate, smooth (with the upper portion shiny, brownish, or purplish), compound and about 15 cm long, comprising 3-6 pairs of leaflets.


Medicinal Value:


■ A decoction of the bark may serve as an antipyretic (reduces fever).


■ it may serve also as an astringent.


■ It is also used as a tonic (increases body tone).
